Initiatives
Momentum Initiative
There are areas of the world where there has been great progress and indications of significant momentum for the church.
Recognizing God’s faithfulness, this initiative will allow us to strengthen and expand the work already in motion around the world. We will focus on areas where our programs are well established and effective, moving towards developing Christian leaders and long-term sustainability.
The goals for the Momentum Initiative:
- Increase the number of scholars who can complete their PhD studies in their home countries/regions by strengthening core faculty (via the JSM-Langham Scholars Program) and library resources (via the JSM-Langham Literature program) at key seminaries in the Majority World where JSM-Langham Scholar graduates already have influence. In 10 years, we aim to have strengthened doctoral programs elsewhere to the point where the majority of scholars are able to achieve doctorates in their own country or continent.
- Actively seek and fund local Christian thought-
leaders so that they may write, publish, and distribute culturally relevant theological books in their locales and in their own languages. The increased capacity of Majority World seminaries (see above) would provide the cultural context for these writers. - Increase participation in preaching movements in these “momentum” areas by ensuring that pastors of new and growing churches are receiving the resources (JSM-Langham Literature) and support (JSM-Langham Preaching/Scholars) they need to preach life-changing, expositional sermons; to establish indigenous and sustainable preaching movements in some 40 countries over the next 10 years, equipping some 3000 pastors and lay preachers with the aim that they will, in turn, train thousands of others.
Opportunity Initiative
Opportunity exists in those areas of the world where the church is small and embryonic or where recent government changes have led to greater openness to the gospel. Initial investment in these areas can have substantial impact.
Just as we give thanks to God for countries, churches, and institutions where the JSM-Langham programs have long been instrumental in building strength and capacity, so we are very conscious of other parts of the world and of the global Christian family that have scarcely been touched by our work. There are fast-growing churches with desperate needs for pastoral training, theological education, relevant literature, and biblical preaching skills. There are other Christian communities that are struggling—tiny minorities under oppression or outright persecution. They, too, need our creative help in serving the needs of their pastors and congregations.
As we contemplate being able to say “job finished” in some places, we face many new opportunities for fresh investment in places where for local, religious, and/or logistical reasons, JSM-Langham has had limited or no involvement.
These Opportunity regions are:
- China
- Central Asia
- Central and Eastern Europe
- The Arab world
- French- and Portuguese-speaking Africa
- Cuba and other parts of Latin America
